When a baby is born the doctor will perform some tests on your child to check their physical condition. It is called the APGAR test. It is used to identify whether your baby needs urgent medical care. 

During an APGAR Test, your baby’s heart rate, breathing, reflex response, muscle tone, and skin coloration are measured. These signs are evaluated at one minute after birth and at five minutes after birth. Each test is given a score between zero and two, and the five scores are added together to make up the APGAR score. In the APGAR tests if your baby is score more than 7 points your baby it means that your baby’s health is in good condition. 

 

Why does a baby need a vitamin K shot?

When a baby is born they have less amount of vitamin K. So the baby will immediately have the vitamin K shot, so that it will help for clotting of the blood . This will help to prevent a serious bleeding problem known as Hemorrhagic Disease of the newborn.

What are newborn screening tests?

All newborns are screened to check certain birth defects. With early detection, the problems will be treated and cured. The following tests are done by taking the sample blood of your baby:

  • Phenylketonuria (PKU). 
  • Galactosemia .
  • Sickle Cell Anemia.
  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Hypothyroidism.

Newborn skin conditions:

If you notice something abnormal about your baby skin, don’t panic. This normally happens to many babies. Common newborn skin conditions are generally harmless and they will often go away automatically.

Handling a newborn:

  • Wash your hands before handling your baby: Make sure that you wash your hands because the baby has less immunity power and they get infected easily. 
  • Support your baby’s head and neck:  Give support to the head of your baby while carrying her or when you lay down the baby.
